Dr. Stacy Travis, a native of Kentucky, received her Bachelors of Science degree at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. She received the Murray State University Presidential Scholarship, a prestigious four-year full academic scholarship. She majored in biology, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and was inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. From there, she attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. During that time she was an active member of the American Medical Women’s Association.
Having selected a career in obstetrics and gynecology, she headed to Texas where she completed her internship and residency at the University of Texas – Southwestern at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Her professional career began in Texas where she stayed on as an attending at Parkland for four years. She began her private practice career in Plano, Texas before moving to the Southeast.
After working with Carolina Ob-Gyn Care in Spartanburg, South Carolina, she and Dr. Saltzman founded Biltmore Ob-Gyn in 1995. Dr. Travis is Board Certified and a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Travis and her husband, Dr. Gerald Travis, a pediatric psychiatrist, live in Asheville with her two children.
Dr. Lisa Chitour, originally from Texas, received her Bachelors of Arts Degree at the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with Honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Remaining in Texas, she headed to Baylor College of Medicine where she not only received her MD with High Honors, but was inducted into the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. Choosing a career in women’s health, she completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was briefly an Assistant Clinical Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania before settling into private practice with the Princeton Medical Group in Princeton, New Jersey in 1983.
Dr. Chitour remained in Princeton until moving to the mountains of North Carolina in 2006. She is Board Certified and a fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. While at Princeton, she was named a top doctor in the New York Metro Area from 2000 through 2005. She joined Biltmore Ob-Gyn in 2006.
Dr. Chitour lives in Asheville with her husband, Naguib, and their three children.
Dr. Stacey Olney, originally from East Tennessee, attended Emory University for her Bachelors in Science in Biology. She worked in women's health research at Wake Forest University after graduation and then went on to receive a Masters of Science Degree in Nutrition with a concentration in breastfeeding from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From there she left the South and moved to Albany, New York to attend medical school at Albany Medical School where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
She joined the United States Navy prior to attending medical school and completed her OB/GYN residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. She completed tours of duty as a staff OB/GYN at Naval Hospital Guam and Naval Hospital Camp LeJeune and was awarded the Naval Achievement and Naval Commendation medals for her time in service.
She obtained board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2012 and is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is committed to evidence based practice and has interests in minimally invasive surgery, decreasing cesarean section rates and encouraging and supporting mothers who desire to breastfeed.
Dr. Olney, her husband Mark Leeson and their three children are happy to be settled in the beautiful North Carolina mountains, close to family and friends.
Dr. Courtney Cohen was born and raised in rural Virginia. She received her BS in Neuroscience at The College of William and Mary and then earned her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Venturing away from Virginia, she next came to Vermont where she completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center in 2017. She then returned South to settle in Asheville, NC, a place Courtney grew up visiting and always longed to return. When Courtney is not at the office or hospital, she can generally be found outdoors with her husband and two dogs, Odi and Mars. In September, Dr. Cohen and her husband welcomed a new additional to their family, a son.
Dr. Elizabeth Garbarino, a native of Tennessee, received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. At the University of Richmond, she majored in biology, graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. From Virginia, she headed back to Tennessee, where she attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. Selecting a career in obstetrics and gynecology, she completed her internship and residency at The Ohio State University. She is Board Certified and currently a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as the American Medical Association. She began her private practice with Biltmore Ob-Gyn in 2006. In the fall of 2016, Dr. Garbarino made the decision to focus solely on Gynecology.
Dr. Garbarino and her husband, Dr. Judd Garbarino, an Emergency medicine physician, live in Asheville with their daughter and son.
Michelle Tenaglia, CNM has 12 years of experience in women’s health as a Registered Nurse and 6 years as a Certified Nurse Midwife. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and her Master’s degree in midwifery at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland in 2010. She has delivered over 500 babies in a variety of settings, including Mission Hospital for the last few years. She is passionate about providing safe, women centered midwifery care. She is honored to be a part of your journey to welcoming the newest members of your family and to be able to provide well woman and gynecology care to the Asheville community.
When not at work she enjoys spending time at her home on 6 acres in Mars Hill with her husband, daughter and 2 dogs. She enjoys all things outdoors, hiking, cooking and partaking in all the delicious food and seasonal get-togethers that Asheville has to offer.
Lauren Fountain, WHNP, CNM joined our practice in the summer of 2016. She is a native of Asheville and has lived here most of her life. She attended nursing school at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. After graduating she spent a year as an Americorps volunteer on the border of Mexico in Texas at a birth center, which helped solidify her interest in midwifery. She then spent the next 9 years serving the women of WNC as a nurse in labor and delivery at Mission Hospital. She completed her dream of becoming a nurse-midwife attending Frontier Nursing University Master of nursing program. During her master’s program she also became a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner.
She believes strongly in providing quality healthcare to women and their families. She grew up observing her mother providing childbirth education working for the health department, and also takes joy in taking time to educate her patients and their families. She enjoys spending time with her husband, who is also a WNC native, and their dog Gus. Together they cook, hike, spend time with friends and family and love to travel all over the world.
Nan Nussman, a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner and native of Western NC, received her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Haywood Community College in 2000 where she was voted Outstanding Nursing Student by her peers. She then began working in the surgical ICU at the VA Medical Center where she stayed until 2002. Her career with Biltmore Ob Gyn started in 2002 when she was initially hired as a phone triage nurse. While continuing to work at Biltmore Ob Gyn, she obtained her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from East Tennessee State University in 2006. Pursuing her degree further, she obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University in 2009 where she was voted Outstanding Nurse Practitioner by the Western Carolina faculty. Nan officially joined our provider staff later that same year. She and her husband Scott are living and raising their two children in Haywood County.
Lisa Cotter, a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, grew up in Western North Carolina. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from Gardner-Webb University and began working as a critical care cardia nurse. She went on to further her education and pursue a Master of Science degree. In 2015, she graduated with honors from Gardner-Web University and choose to direct her focus on womens health. Lisa is passionate about helping her patients lead a happy and healthy lifestyle.
Lisa and her husband have two children, three dogs and seven chickens. When not working, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family, road biking, beach trips and all things outdoors.
