Dr. Stacy Travis

Dr. Stacy Travis is a native of Kentucky. She received her Bachelors of Science degree from Murray State University. She attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Having selected a career in obstetrics and gynecology, she headed to Texas where she completed her internship and residency at the University of Texas – Southwestern at Parkland Memorial Hospital. After working with Carolina Ob-Gyn Care in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Dr. Travis moved to Asheville and founded Biltmore Ob-Gyn in 1995. Dr. Travis is Board Certified and a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In 2022, Dr. Travis decided to change her focus to solely practicing gynecology. This has allowed her to gain more expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as vNotes. She currently is serving as a teacher and mentor for other Ob-Gyn physicians interested in the vNOTES surgical method.

Dr. Travis and her husband, Dr. Gerald Travis, a pediatric psychiatrist, live in Asheville. She enjoys playing golf and traveling.

Dr. Stacey Olney

Dr. Stacey Olney

Dr. Stacey Olney, originally from East Tennessee, attended Emory University for her Bachelors in Science in Biology. She worked in women’s health research at Wake Forest University after graduation and then went on to receive a Master’s of Science Degree in Nutrition with a concentration in breastfeeding from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She attended medical school at Albany Medical School where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

She joined the United States Navy prior to attending medical school and completed her OB/GYN residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. She completed tours of duty as a staff OB/GYN at Naval Hospital Guam and Naval Hospital Camp LeJeune and was awarded the Naval Achievement and Naval Commendation medals for her time in service. She has been at Biltmore OB/GYN since 2014.

She obtained board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2012 and is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is committed to evidence-based practice and has interests in minimally invasive surgery, maintaining low cesarean section rates and encouraging and supporting women throughout their lives.

Dr. Olney, her husband and 3 kids love being in Asheville with great culture, restaurants, and outside activities.

• Dr. Onley took her time to really talk to me and hear out my concerns before starting the exam. She offered me treatment for something I have been suffering from or years and have seen other specialists for in the past- something I did not know she would even address let alone offer help

• I think Dr. Olney is an excellent and very educated doctor. She has always full answer any of my questions and we talk through the different stages of the annual exam. I feel extremely lucky to meet Dr. Olney and have her as my doctor

Dr. Courtney Cohen

Dr. Courtney Cohen

Dr. Courtney Cohen was born and raised in rural Virginia. She received her BS in Neuroscience at The College of William and Mary and then earned her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Venturing away from Virginia, she next completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center in 2017. She then returned South to settle in Asheville, NC, a place Courtney had fallen in love with on frequent family vacations as a child. Dr. Cohen and her husband have welcomed two boys, Ben and Gabe, and twin girls, Addison and Olivia, to their family since moving to Asheville. When she is not at the office or hospital, she is busy having fun with her four kids, two dogs, and husband …. or sleeping! Dr. Cohen finds it an absolute privilege to be able to care for women across their lifespan – from girls getting their first period to helping women navigate the many changes with menopause and everything in between!! She has the best job!

• Dr. Cohen is always knowledgeable, open minded, friendly, and helpful. She is the best gynecologist I have ever had and I feel completely comfortable during my appointments. The nurse was also helpful and made me at ease!!

• Dr. Cohen and the entire staff I interacted with were incredibly friendly and helpful! I had a ton of questions and concerns, and all of them were answered.

• She addressed all my concerns and was very gentle and communicative during the exam. I had some trauma in the past, so I needed a lot of communication in order to feel comfortable and she provided that.

• She has always taken the time to listen to my concerns and answer my questions with thoroughness and kindness. Her compassionate approach and gentle demeanor have helped me feel at ease during the appointment, and I have felt truly heard and understood.

Dr. Alyssa Nathan

Dr. Alyssa Nathan

Dr. Alyssa Nathan joined Biltmore OB-GYN in August 2020. She received her BS in Biology with a double minor in Chemistry and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. While attending school, she was the captain of the Varsity Women’s Soccer team. She earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her OB-GYN residency in Asheville at MAHEC.

Dr. Nathan and her husband, a pilot, love the Asheville area and community. She enjoys spending time with her husband and son, especially outdoors.

• Dr. Nathan was professional, warm and gave detailed information for all my questions. I felt free to ask any question without judgement and the exam was gentle and stress-free.

• Dr Nathan provides a lot of Information to her patients and allows them to make decisions well informed. She is not pushy but rather wants the best for her patients. It’s easy to tell she’s genuine.

• Dr. Nathan is gentle and caring. Explained all my concerns, she takes her time to communicate with patients.

Dr. Laura Carlton

Dr. Laura Carlton completed her undergraduate education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She majored in Chemistry and French and spent semesters abroad studying religion in Southeast Asia and neocolonialism in Senegal. After working on the Haiti cholera outbreak with the CDC’s Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch, she continued her education at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, where she was awarded the Beatrice Tucker award for women’s health advocacy. She then returned to Atlanta for residency at Emory University, where she had the privilege to learn from the wonderful doctors, staff and patients at Grady Memorial Hospital. There, her research focused on disparities in cervical cancer screening and follow-up and received the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology trainee research award. She also served as a resident representative to the Graduate Medical Education committee. Her interests include adolescent health and family planning, health literacy, polycystic ovarian syndrome and the benefits of diet and exercise on women’s health. She has developed an interest in vaginal laparoscopy, performing hysterectomies, tubal ligations, salpingectomies, and other adnexal surgeries using v-notes method.

Dr. Carlton lives in West Asheville with her husband Wes and pesky dogs, Margot and Freya. Outside of work, she enjoys weightlifting, yoga, hiking the mountains of North Carolina, watching documentaries, speaking French and planning her next outdoor adventure.

• The whole experience was great. The staff was efficient and friendly and Dr Carlton was exceptional. She was very respectful of my personal choices and took a lot of time to explain my options and what to expect in my treatment.

• Dr. Carlton is by far the best doctor I have had that cares about her patients. She went above and beyond explaining the procedure and each step with me. When a doctor shows they care and goes above and beyond to take time when they have a very busy schedule it means a lot to the patients!

Michelle Tenaglia

Michelle Tenaglia, CNM

Michelle Tenaglia is an experienced Certified Nurse Midwife who enjoys practicing medicine focused on women’s health. She received her bachelor’s degree nursing at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and her Master’s degree in midwifery at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland in 2010. She is passionate about providing safe, women centered midwifery care. She is honored to be a part of your journey to welcoming the newest members of your family and to be able to provide well woman and gynecological care to the Asheville community.

When not at work she enjoys spending time at her home on 6 acres in Mars Hill with her husband, 3 daughters, a dog and 2 horses. She enjoys all things outdoors, hiking, cooking and partaking in all the delicious food and seasonal get-togethers that Asheville has to offer.

Mikaya Bass

Mikaya Bass

Mikaya Bass is a Certified Nurse Midwife who joined Biltmore OB-Gyn in 2023. She was born and raised in the lovely state of Michigan. Her love and passion for women’s health was inspired by her parents who both work in healthcare – her mother as a nurse practitioner and her father as an OBGYN. She received her nursing degree from Southern Adventist University. Mikaya has worked in a variety of settings as a nurse including the intensive care unit, trauma care unit, and labor and delivery. Working in these different settings allowed her to be well rounded in her nursing career. She went on to obtain my Master’s Degree in Nursing as a Certified Nurse Midwife from East Carolina University.

She is happily married to her high school sweetheart and together we have two dogs, a Labrador Retriever and a Great Pyrenees. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, baking, and spending time with friends and family.

Nan Nussman

Nan Nussman, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and native of Western NC, received her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Haywood Community College in 2000 where she was voted Outstanding Nursing Student by her peers. She then began working in the surgical ICU at the VA Medical Center where she stayed until 2002. Her career with Biltmore Ob Gyn started in 2002 when she was initially hired as a phone triage nurse. While continuing to work at Biltmore Ob Gyn, she obtained her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from East Tennessee State University in 2006. Pursuing her degree further, she obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University in 2009 where she was voted Outstanding Nurse Practitioner by the Western Carolina faculty. Nan officially joined our provider staff later that same year. She and her husband Scott are living and raising their two children in Haywood County.

• Nan is an incredible healthcare provider. We have established a wonderful relationship over the years, one that I hope continues for many more! She listens and is attentive to my concerns and needs without judgment. I would highly recommend Nan’s practice for folks looking for local practitioner.
