Midwives

We are excited to offer the option for our patients to be seen by a midwife. Some women prefer midwifery services for the extra time and attention they can provide.

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) provide a full range of primary healthcare services to women including routine gynecological checkups, family planning services, preconception care, prenatal and postpartum care, and, of course, delivering babies.

The CNMs at Biltmore OB-Gyn are registered nurses who have furthered their education with a Master’s of Science in Nurse Midwifery and are certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). To be certified, a CNM must be formally educated in midwifery through an accredited program affiliated with an institution of higher learning, demonstrate clinical competence, and pass a rigorous national certifying exam. Our midwives work collegially with the OB/Gyn physicians for any concerns of issue that might require surgical intervention or a more detailed medical opinion.

“To me, there is no greater honor or source of fulfillment than being a midwife. The midwifery profession encompasses everything I hold dear and I believe it is far more than a profession, but instead a privilege and a calling. I love serving as a champion for women, providing support, encouragement, and empowerment during the most vulnerable and intimate time in one’s life. My approach to midwifery is centered on forming a strong relationship with my patients, thereby establishing a foundation of trust and understanding. Throughout the prenatal period, I work closely with pregnant people, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being while addressing any concerns or questions they may have. I seek to provide my patients with high quality compassionate care while incorporating the most current evidence-based practices. During labor and birth, I strive to create a calm and supportive atmosphere. I support the use of low interventions whenever possible, such as intermittent monitoring. I also encourage the use of relaxation techniques, hydrotherapy, and position changes both during labor and while pushing. My ultimate goal is to empower people to make informed decisions about their birthing process while maintaining a high standard of safety and care based on evidence-based practices. “
